SOFTWARE :

Computers software ,or just software, is a collection of computer programs and related data that provides the instructions for telling a computer what to do and how to do it.Software refers to one or more computer programs and data held in the storage of the computer for some specific  reasons. In other words, software is a set of progams ,procedures, algorithms and its documentation concerned with the operation of a data processing system. Computer software is so called to distinguish it from computer hardware, which encompasses the physical interconnections and devices required to store and execute (or run) the software

A computer has two main parts –Hardware¬†and¬†software¬†. Hardware are the physical parts of a computer and we can touch and feel them.The hardware cannot do anything by itself. It requires the services of a logical component that acts as a brain warehouse of the computer. This component is nothing but the software. It controls the computer hardware parts and makes operational. Thus we can say that,”hardware without software in a computer is equivalent to a human body without a brain”.

Software is that part of the computer, which controls it to give us the maximum amount of output. A computer works very systematically through some set of instructions which is called Program.For execution of many jobs related to another in a specific area ,we need more than one program. So, we have to feed a set of programs to perform that work. This set of program is called Software. 

 

TYPES OF SOFTWARES :

Software is a set of instructions that tells the computer step-by-step how to perform a particular task.
There are three types of Software in use –
Operating or System Software, Programming Software and Application Software.
System software and Application software are computer programs. The system software is also installed during the installation of the operating system. However, the application software utilizes the capabilities of the computer on which it is installed.System Software :
The programs and the files that comprise the operating system are called System software. System software is a computer software designed to operate the computer hardware to provide basic functionality and a platform for running application software. System software includes device drivers, operating system, servers, utilities, and Windows systems.
System software is responsible for managing a variety of independent hardware components, so that they can work together harmoniously. Its purpose is to unburden the application software programmer from the often complex details
Of the particular computer being used, including such accessories as communication devices, printers , device readers , displays and keyboards , and also to partition the computer’s resources such as memory and processor time in a safe and stable manner.
System software is also called¬†low-level software¬†as it runs at most basic level of the computer. It just creates a graphical user reviews through which the user can interact with hardware with the help of operating system. System Software just runs at the back so you don’t need to bother about it.
The system software provides an environment to run application software and it controls the computer as well as the applications installed on the machine.

Programming Software :
Programming Software includes tools of programs or applications that software developers use to create, debug , maintain ,or otherwise support other programs and applications.The term usually refers to relatively simple programs such as compilers, debuggers , interpreters, linkers and text editor, that can be combined together to accomplish a task , much as one might use multiple hand tools to fix a physical object.Programming tools are intended to assist a programmer in writing computer programs, and they may be combined in an integrated development environment (IDE) to more easily manage all of these functions.

Application Software:
The subclass of a computer program which utilizes the capabilities of computer is called Application Software. Application here means the application software and the implementation. The example of Application Software programs includes media players , spreadsheets ,and word processors. When multiple applications are packaged together, then it is called application suite.
There is a common user interface in each application suite which makes it easier for the user to learn different applications. In some cases, such as Microsoft office, the various application programs have the ability to interact with each other. This facility is very handy for the user.For example, a user can embed the spreadsheet in a word processor using the application software. It helps the user work faster more efficiently and thus provides more productivity than manual performance. Application Software cannot run without the presence of system software.

TYPES OF APPLICATION SOFTWARE :
Application Software can be grouped into two broad  categories :
1.General purpose Application Software
2.Special purpose Application Software

1.General purpose Application Software :
These are called package Software or commercial software.Single software can be applied to a wide variety of tasks includes, MS office, Corel Draw, Adobe In Design CS5, Adobe Photoshop CS5, etc.
2.Special purpose Application Software :
The software that is designed to perform a specific task is known as the special purpose application software. This is also called custom software .The software can perform only one task for which which it has been designed.Custom software  for the tasks of a large organisation may be extremely Complex and it takes a lot of time to develop. For example software to process us inventory control, software to maintain bank accounts, software to use in airline booking system etc.
